Key West Half Marathon & Inaugural 5K
Run
The
13th annual Key West ½ Marathon was run Sunday Jan 23rd. This year
also featured an inaugural 5-K run. A total of 915 runners from 7
countries braved the early morning chill to participate in the runs.
Of the 915 runners, 413 were from Florida; with 502 coming to Key West
from other states or distant parts of the world. Brazil, Canada, South
Africa, Tortola, Grand Cayman and Germany were all represented.
The hit of the 5-K race was Riley Smith
(Shepergstown, Fl), age two, who placed third in the 14 and under age
bracket and promptly ate his prize. Riley was the only 4 legged golden
retriever registered in the race. The overall male winner for the 5-K
was Aeschton Tomita (Key West) with the time of 19:18. David McCord
(Key West) took the male masters crown with a time of 22:25. On the
female slate, Sally-Ann Patton (Atlanta, GA) with a time of 23:50 and
Amy Feed (Excelsior, MN 25:20) captured the Masters titles
respectively.
For the grandaddy event of the day, the
top prize for the half marathon went to Marius Acker from Durbanville
, South Africa(1:15:03) Second Place to Tom Dever from Terre Haute,
Indiana and Third Place going to Terry Lillicrapp from Media, Pa.
Martin Sykut of Marathon (1:23:18) winning the male masters category
which included 5 participants over 70 years of age. For the females,
Angie Key (Hummelstown, Pa 1:31:55) took the overall title, Second
Place Jennifer Grimes form Sarasota, FL and Third Place Helena Bursa
form Big Pine Key, Florida. In the Masters Division: Laurie Gaudreau
(York, Me 1:36:52) capturing the masters title, Second Place Kristi
Gaudreau of York, Maine, Second to Kristi Choate of Glen Ellyn,
Illinois and Third to Jessica Lee of Chapel Hill, NC.

Volunteer Coordinator Dennis Gormley who helps organize the volunteers
( many are from Sigsbee & Trumbo Point who every year with great
enthusiasm cheer on the runners and man the course and water stations.
